    What is Facebook?

Facebook is a Web-based application which allows participants to upload photos, videos, events, and status and share these with their "friends". In Facebook parlance, a friend is someone you have connected with on the service; becoming friends requires the permission of both users. It is also possible to create a Facebook page (more suitable for businesses and organizations) where people can "like" or "follow" the page, without the page administrators being able to access the individuals profile.

Users have the opportunity to control privacy settings to prevent unauthorized users from seeing information. Because of the fine-grained nature of the privacy settings, many people find them confusing. It is important to review and adjust the privacy settings for your account, to ensure only the information you desire, is made publicly available.

    Facebook conventions/features:

    • Profile - Individual Facebook users create a profile, in which they may provide information about their age, sex, relationship status, contact information, photograph, etc.
    • Wall - Each facebook user has a wall, an area where they can post status updates and share photos, etc.  Your friends can also post to your wall. (http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=820)
    • News feed -  News feed is the center column of a Facebook users homepage which lists stories and updates of your friends and Pages you follow. Facebook uses an algorithm to present stories it thinks you'll be interested in, or you can choose to view all of the stories in reverse-chronological order. (http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=408)
